With your feet in the sand, music in the background, surrounded by thousands of fellow athletes and an even bigger crowd behind the barricades; goosebumps on your arms, the tension is tangible. That’s the feeling that ten of thousands of athletes must have had over the past 40 years in these fi nal moments before the gun went off for the Holland Triathlon, nowadays Challenge Almere- Amsterdam. It’s not only the second-oldest traditional triathlon in the world, but it’s also grown into an Almere tradition. The event is inextricably linked to the Dutch city.

While Challenge Almere-Amsterdam in 2021 prepares for the World Championship Long Distance – 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and 42.2 km of running – authors Tim Moria and Romy Louise van Schooneveld immersed themselves in the 40 years of history of the event and its “magic”, as they refer to it. They look back on the most memorable moments, talk to the organization, the athletes who fi nished more than twenty times and the winners who saw their lives change forever when they celebrated their victory in Almere.
